1. RE: just supposing

The Akira class was origionaly designed as an exploration and research vessel for mapping uncharted regions of space. The eight torpedo tubes in the saucer section, especially those on the sides, were supposed to be used for launching probes into nebulae, gas giants, and other such phenomenae and the launch bays were meant to house a large number of sensor heavy runabouts and long-range scout ships. The Dominion war saw a need for more battle worthy vessels, so the probe launchers were replaced by pulse fire torpedo tubes and the signature roll bar torpedo array was added. In addition, the hangar arrangment was altered to accomidate 10 full fighter squadrons, There was origionally a plan to remove the roll bar arrays after the war, but it was later deemed more prudent to leave the class as is. While the Akira and several other classes of her time were deemed to be 'more combat oriented' than other Federation ships, there are stil no dedicated federation warships outside of their one man fighters. Do you find this valuable? |
