These weapons are the newest in torpedo technology, part of Starfleet's race to combat the Borg. The Akira Class' standard warhead load includes100 quantum torpedoes. They can inflict more serious damage then a photon torpedo or a phaser blast. The quantum torpedos use artificial quantum filaments as a power source. A quantum filament is a natural source of energy found in space. It has no mass and, if triggered correctly, can release large amounts of energy. Using readings taken by science teams studying natural filaments, the designers created small artificial fillaments. What makes a quantum torpedo so powerful is that the warhead contains 50-100 small artificial filaments.

During the early stages of design, the primary problem was locating a suitable power source, something that could be loaded into a torpedo during production and remain stable throughout a mission. The designers found such a power source in the form of the quantum filament. This reduces the risk of torpedo loading malfunction down to practically nothing. Since they come pre-loaded, they have been installed on all starships Excelsior class and above. so far they have not yet been deployed aboard the Akira, but we are certan that they soon will be. They were only deployed aboard the Defiant, Sovereign and Excelsior during the Dominion war though.
