Flight Training

Flight training is the process of training the pilots aboard a Federation starship. In the case of carrier-based vessles such as the Akira-class, this often takes the form of training for combat pilots, who will operate the fighter craft aboard the starship.

Flight training consists of three main aspects: lecture training on the technical aspects of space combat, holodeck simulations of battles or other situations, and 'live-fire' exercises in real fighters.

Lectures

These are usually presented in the pilots' briefing room, to the wing as a whole or to a single squadron. They usually relate to the theories and principles behind starfighter tactics and operations. Occasionally they will be reviews of previous missions or historical battles, with the intention of indentifing and rectifying flaws.

Holodeck Training

Using the advanced simulations techniquies of the holodeck and the gravity-manipulation technology of Starfleet, modern pilots can train in holodeck simulators so realistic that they can be mistaken for the real thing. This allows completely accurate training missions that can cover whatever the instructor's imagination can concoct. The first effective holodeck fighter training package was designed aboard the USS Corsair, and from there has become a standard part of pilot instruction.

Live-Fire Exercises

No simulation, however, can make up for real-life experience. Live-fire exercises, however, are dangerous and difficult to organise aboard an active-duty starship, and usually require close co-ordination with the CO of the vessel. These exercises make up the bulk of final exams at Starfleet Flight Academy.
