Visually, the most distinctive feature of this class of ship is the catamaran like hull ridges on the engineering or
secondary hull. These connect the warp nacelle pylons with the primary hull, or saucer section, and, in effect, form a central 'valley' between them - a low, protected area featuring the
main bridge, which is located atop the saucer's section.
Designed at the
Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars, the class was intended to fulfill carrier missions for Starfleet. More so than almost any other Starfleet vessel, the
Akira's primary hull is dominated by a huge through-deck
flight deck complex.
The
Akira Class features interchangeable
modules that can be fitted within a matter of hours at a Starbase Facility which keeps a standard 10
modules ready to be fitted to each vessel.
When the project became active all of the latest Federation Technology was used in the construction of the ships. As a warship the craft is extremely well equipped. The ship is also fitted with state of the art
defensive systems. Many times, the
Akira Class is used to test
experimental technology.
